Burkina Faso Security Agencies Foil Coup Attempt Against Junta Leaders

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso – Burkina Faso’s security agencies have thwarted a coup attempt against the country’s military rulers, authorities said on Wednesday. The attempted coup was foiled on Tuesday, according to a statement from the ruling military junta. The statement said that army officers and others had planned to seize power and plunge the country into “chaos.”

Four people have been arrested in connection with the coup attempt, and two others are on the run, the military prosecutor said. An investigation has been opened.

The coup attempt comes at a time when Burkina Faso is facing a number of challenges, including a jihadist insurgency and political instability. The country has experienced two coups in the past year.

The foiling of the coup attempt is a positive development, but it is important to note that Burkina Faso remains a fragile country. The government and the security agencies must work to address the root causes of the country’s problems, such as poverty and inequality, in order to prevent future coups from happening.
