Confessions Emerge in Tragic Murder of Retired Benue Judge Over Property Dispute

The suspects in the tragic killing of the retired President of the Customary Court of Appeal in Makurdi, Benue State, Justice Margaret Igbetar, have reportedly confessed to the heinous crime. The motive behind this heart-wrenching act was revealed to be a dispute over a family’s landed property.
Incident Details:
On August 24, 2023, armed assailants invaded the residence of the retired judge, located at Wantor Kwange Street, opposite the School of Medicine, Benue State University, Makurdi, claiming her life in the process. It was only days later that her decomposed remains were discovered by grieving relatives.
In a significant breakthrough, the Commissioner of Police, Batholomew Onyeka, paraded four of the suspected individuals responsible for the murder. Among them, the deceased’s nephew, identified as Aondohemba Joseph, confessed to orchestrating the plot. He led a gang to the residence of the retired judge, where the tragic incident took place.

Others implicated in the crime include the late judge’s driver, the security personnel, and additional family members.

Commissioner Onyeka disclosed, “The suspect (nephew) who eventually confessed to have planned and recruited other people to help him in killing his aunty led a team of detectives to Adikpo, Kwande Local Government Area where the following suspects were arrested; Igbazenda Gbidye, 63, and Dzungwenen Ukor, 40.”
