NANS Rejects Fee Hike in OAU, Plans Protest On Monday

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has rejected the recent fee hike by the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife. The students’ body has also threatened to protest the fee hike on Monday, October 2, 2023.

The OAU management had recently announced a fee hike of between 50% and 100% for all students. The management said that the fee hike was necessary to improve the quality of education at the university.

However, NANS has rejected the fee hike, saying that it is insensitive and that it will make it difficult for many students to afford to attend the university.

“The fee hike by OAU is insensitive and unrealistic,” NANS President Sunday Asefon said in a statement. “Many students are already struggling to afford to attend the university. The fee hike will make it impossible for many students to continue their education.”

Asefon also said that NANS will stage a protest on Monday, October 2, 2023, to demand that the OAU management reverse the fee hike.

“We are calling on all students to join us in a protest on Monday, October 2, 2023, to demand that the OAU management reverse the fee hike,” Asefon said. “We will not rest until the fee hike is reversed.”

The OAU management has not yet responded to the threat of a protest by NANS.

It is important to note that the right to education is a fundamental human right. Every child has the right to a free and compulsory primary education. Secondary and higher education should be made generally available and accessible to all by all appropriate means.

The fee hike by OAU is a violation of the right to education, It will make it difficult for many students to afford to attend the university. The OAU management should reverse the fee hike and make education more affordable for all students.
