Prince Cornelius Nnaji Reclaims Mandate As Tribunal Sacks Labour Party Rep Member, Prof. Sunday Nnamchi

The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Enugu, has nullified the return of the Labour Party’s candidate, Prof. Sunday Nnamchi as the House of Representatives member for Enugu East/Isi-Uzo Federal Constituency.

Instead, the three-man panel led by A. M. Abubakar declared the candidate of People’s Democratic Party, Hon. Prince Cornelius Nnaji, as the duly elected candidate of the election conducted on 25th February, 2023.

Prince Nnaji, a one-term Federal lawmaker, had challenged the declaration of Prof. Nnamchi by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the winner of the election on the grounds that the respondent was not duly sponsored and qualified to contest the election under the candidacy of Labour Party.

In its Judgment on the petition, the tribunal agreed with the petitioner that the candidate of the Labour Party was not qualified to contest the election.

The panel tout de suite declared the petitioner, Prince Cornelius Nnaji the winner.

Meanwhile, the judgment has sparked off jubilation across the 23 Wards of the Constituency.

As to whether the judgement in favour of Prince Cornelius Nnaji will affect other Labour Party candidates who were declared winner

There are speculations that the victory of Prince Cornelius Nnaji in the tribunal may affect other winners of various positions who contested on the platform of the Labour Party.

This speculation is somewhat considering the basis on which Judgment was declared. Amb. Enemoh Ikechukwu Chris poses that most of the candidates who emerged came through the same process which produced Prof. Sunday Nnamchi.
