By Gyado T Emmanuel

In a critical move, the Nigerian Senate has taken a decisive step towards safeguarding the nation’s interests in the wake of potential exits by International Oil Companies (IOCs) following the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA). The Senate has mandated its Committee on Petroleum Upstream, Downstream, and Gas to conduct an in-depth inquiry into this matter.

This pivotal development comes in response to a motion tabled before the Senate by Senator Aniekan Bassey, the representative of Akwa Ibom North-East. The motion, titled “Urgent Need for Enquiry into Implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021 with Regards to Potential Exit of International Oil Companies from Nigeria: Case of ExxonMobil in Akwa Ibom State,” was presented during Thursday’s plenary session.

The statement released by the Press Unit of Senator Bassey’s office, headquartered in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, shed light on the urgency and significance of this inquiry. The Senator, cognizant of the potential ramifications of IOC exits, urged the Senate to intervene and take measures to rectify the situation.

The Petroleum Industry Act, a landmark legislation passed in 2021, was designed to usher in a new era of transparency, efficiency, and competitiveness within Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. However, concerns have arisen regarding its implementation, particularly regarding the operations of International Oil Companies.

ExxonMobil, a prominent player in the Nigerian oil sector and a significant contributor to the nation’s economy, has emerged as a focal point in this inquiry. The potential ramifications of ExxonMobil’s exit from Akwa Ibom State, as outlined by Senator Bassey, underscore the critical nature of this investigation.

The Senate’s decision to entrust the Committee on Petroleum Upstream, Downstream, and Gas with this task reflects a commitment to a thorough, comprehensive inquiry. The committee is tasked with scrutinizing all aspects of the PIA’s implementation and its impact on the operations and potential exits of IOCs.

This proactive stance by the Senate demonstrates a dedication to safeguarding Nigeria’s interests and ensuring the stability and vitality of the nation’s oil and gas sector. The outcome of this inquiry is poised to shape the trajectory of the sector, influencing policies and decisions that will resonate far beyond its boundaries.
