Senate President Calls Urgent Meeting Following Dispute Over Procedures

Senate President Calls Urgent…..

In a dramatic turn of events during Tuesday’s plenary session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio called for an immediate closed-door meeting of the Senate. This move came after Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, the Chief Whip of the Senate, left the chamber in response to a ruling that deemed him out of order.

Senator Ndume, representing APC Borno South, had raised a point of order, highlighting alleged uncorrected errors made by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio. The error in question pertained to a motion presented by Senator Summaila Kawu (NNPP Kano South) concerning the reopening of the Nigerian-Niger border. Senator Kawu failed to state the title of his motion.

Under Order 51 of the Senate standing rules, Senator Ndume requested that the Senate President allow for the correction of any observed errors in the proceedings. He emphasized that the Senate, guided by established laws, rules, and procedures, must ensure accuracy in its proceedings.

However, Akpabio swiftly interjected, asserting that once rulings on issues have been made, they cannot be revisited. Consequently, he ruled Senator Ndume out of order.

This incident underscores the significance of adherence to parliamentary procedures and the role of the Senate President in maintaining order during sessions. The urgent closed-door meeting called by Akpabio signals a potential resolution to this dispute.

As the Senate reconvenes, the outcome of this meeting will likely have a bearing on the proceedings and the overall atmosphere in the chamber.
