It is usually said that the reward of teachers is in heaven, but often times than not, these rewards come to them even here on earth, especially through the students they have helped train and formulate in diverse ways. This paradigm is made manifest in the Department of Library and Information Science in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka where two student leaders identified as Odom Joseph Chiedozie (Advocate) and Aneke Sochi Cyriacus Saneke (Pen-Power) – initiated a novel developmental stride.

The duo took it upon themselves to revamp their department building through repainting, making tags for offices and changing the departmental signboard which has been in use for over two decades.

According to the Student leaders, the Library Science Department Building Revamp is a novel initiative geared towards creating an entirely new look for the department.

This initiative was met through repainting of the departmental building, replacing the old tags that identify staff with better ones and changing the departmental signboard which has been in the department for over two decades with a better and more detailed one.

These series of projects were birthed by the need for the department to look better and have a touch of style, and to support the good works of the Head of Department, Prof. A.J.C Mole, and that of the Departmental President, Comr. Oji Nwachukwu Nwagod, and of course all the staff of the department who put in their best in training the students.

Recall that one of the student leaders who orchestrated the Revamp – Dist. Sen. Odom Joseph Chiedozie (Advocate) – is the current SUG Senate President of both campuses of the University of Nigeria who has once initiated a #SnapAnEsaite Project; a project that offered free passport photographs to the 2018/2019 University intakes of the Education Faculty, Unn.

The second student leader who orchestrated the Revamp project, Hon. Aneke Sochi Cyriacus Saneke (Pen-Power), is the Special Assistant on Students Development to the former Udi Local Government Chairman (Hon. Ifeanyi Agu) who initiated the maiden Udi Naganiru Students Essay Competition in Udi Local Government Area during the Covid-19 rampage that kept students at home in 2020.

He is also the Founder and Director of the Pen-Power Foundation which sponsored the Skill-Up Female Esaites, a maiden virtual training of over 500 female students on digital skills in the Education Faculty of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The Pen-Power Foundation has also co-sponsored the DigiAfrica 2022 event by the Tefem Network, and the 2023 Inter-faculty Debate (Word War) in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

It is worthy of note that these two student leaders who pioneered the Departmental Building Revamp Project are already in final year but thought it wise to leave a standing legacy for their department before they are gone. This kind of thought system is not only exemplary but worthy of emulation by every student, especially those who are in the realm of leadership.
