Shaibu, expressing his commitment to effective governance, highlighted his experience, capacity, and knowledge as differentiating factors that set him apart from other contenders vying to succeed Governor Godwin Obaseki. With Obaseki’s second term concluding next year, Shaibu sees himself as well-equipped to lead Edo State into its next phase of development.
Despite calls for power to return to Edo Central Senatorial District, Shaibu clarified that there is no established convention or agreement on zoning. He emphasized that, since the return to democracy in 1999, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has not allocated its governorship ticket to any aspirant from Edo North.
The deputy governor’s decision to enter the gubernatorial race adds a new dimension to the unfolding political landscape in Edo State. As the 2024 election draws nearer, the contest for leadership will likely intensify, with candidates positioning themselves based on their visions for practical governance and addressing the state’s developmental challenges.
