Thumbs up For Maurice Emeka Akueme ~ Sheddy Ozoene, Author of “Clash of Interests, godfathers and the Contest for Political Power in Enugu State” Hails
“Clash of Interest by Sheddy Ozoene” is highly recommended for public consumption ~ Charity Reporters
It was my first time ‘meeting’ Maurice Emeka Akueme, the Enugu State-born philanthropist extraordinaire. For a man who has not stepped in Nigeria since 2008, his name goes far before him. The Maurice Akueme Foundation which he founded and bankrolls, has touched the lives of so many rural folks and the youth of his Udi Local Government Area and beyond.
The video call lasted about 15 minutes, all the way from the UK.
After the initials during which I commended him for those gestures of his that have impacted livelihoods, he explained the reason for the call. He had read a number of reviews of my book, CLASH OF INTERESTS.
That same day, incidentally, the Chairman of THISDAY newspaper’s Editorial Board, Olusegun Adeniyi had devoted part of his weekly column on the back page to discuss the book.
The public spirited man that he is, Akueme said he was impressed with the account of the State’s political history. And he ordered a large quantity of the book and would want it distributed to libraries in some tertiary institutions in Enugu State. He backed it up with cash and within days the publishers started delivering from Abuja.
It was quite amazing for me, and reveals something about ‘the mystery man’. Whatever drives his spirit of philantropy remains to be seen. Time will tell. But one cannot but commend his passion for the public good. I also commend his capacity to run the Foundation from the UK, articulating dozens of its projects and managing the layers of human structures that deliver them in Nigeria.
For now, its thumbs up for the man behind MAF.
