Democracy is a common value shared by all humanity. It is a right for all nations, not a prerogative reserved to a few.

Democracy takes different forms, and there is no one-size-fits-all model. It would be totally undemocratic to measure the diverse political systems in the world with a single yardstick or examine different political civilizations from a single perspective. The political system of a country should be independently decided by its own people.

A functional democracy must have a full set of institutional procedures; more importantly, it should have full participation of the people. It must ensure democracy in terms of both process and outcomes. It must encompass both procedural and substantive democracy, both direct and indirect democracy. It must ensure both people’s democracy and the will of the State. If the people of a country are only called upon to vote and then are forgotten once they have cast their votes; if the people only hear high-sounding promises during an election campaign but have no say whatsoever afterwards; or if they are wooed when their votes are wanted but are ignored once the election is over, then such a democracy is not a true democracy.

And subsequently that is what the populace are facing, but like every other situation whose time has come, there now comes a man who believes that the people must enjoy the dividends of of democracy, Chief Maurice Emeka Akueme has a believe that the people should be allowed to enjoy the benefits of democracy.

Because we all know that…..

Dividends of democracy and economic growth are distributed unfairly, and income growth has stalled for most ordinary people for a long period of time. The Nigeria-style democracy can hardly uphold public order and ethics, nor advance public well-being to the fullest.

Sure enough we will still believe in people who don’t have our interest at heart all in the name of political zoning systems or political party differences.

It is now time to become wise and therefore take steps in the right direction by voting in to power credible leaders.

Democracy is not the law of the majority but protection of the minority and the vunerable.

Let us then remember that the democratic tradition does not advance a single and agreed ideal of popular rule, but is rather an arena of debate in which the notion of popular rule is discussed.

Democracy is not just a question of having a vote. It consists of strengthening each citizen’s possibility and capacity to participate in the deliberations involved in life in society.

Chief Maurice Emeka Akueme has the notion that the legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done.

Money will cease to be master and become the servant of humanity if democracy will rise superior to the money power.

This is only possible if we then allow leaders to be chosen based on their pedigree.

There is a cult of ignorance in Nigeria, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.
