Chief Maurice Emeka Akueme, the founder and president of the Maurice Akueme Foundation (MAF), announced that his foundation will reward First Class graduates from universities who are indigenes of Ukana, his hometown. This statement was made during the prestigious 2024 edition of the Maurice Akueme Foundation’s National Convention and Bursary Award Celebration, held on August 17th, 2024, at the CWO Hall of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ukana, Udi Local Government Area, Enugu State, Nigeria.

The event, attended by distinguished guests and supporters of MAF, was aimed at honouring deserving students with bursaries, while introducing innovative ideas for the community. Among these initiatives, Chief Akueme introduced the Njikokamma Cooperative Society, an initiative aimed at empowering people through self-sustenance by teaching them how to be financially independent rather than relying on continuous handouts. He even pledged some of his ventures to the cooperative, inviting others to join and benefit from it.

Chief Akueme also took the opportunity to reiterate the goals and ideologies of MAF, highlighting both completed and upcoming projects designed to improve the lives of the people. The event included performances, musical displays, awards presentations, lectures, and raffle draws, adding an entertaining and celebratory touch to the occasion.

HRH Igwe Tagbo Ubaka, Oduoha II of Ukana praised Chief Akueme for his humanitarian efforts and urged him to continue his good works despite any obstacles he may face. Chief Sir Chinedu Anih (Chancellor, Coal City University), who chaired the event, also commended Akueme’s generosity, calling on others to follow his example.

A student representative, speaking on behalf of the bursary beneficiaries, expressed gratitude to Chief Akueme for his groundbreaking initiative to support Ukana students, emphasizing that he was the first to recognize them in such a way. The students requested his continued support, to which Chief Akueme responded by initiating the formation of the first-ever Ukana Students Association, pledging to serve as its inaugural sponsor.

The event was a vibrant display of community spirit and dedication to youth empowerment, underscoring Chief Akueme’s commitment to education, empowerment, and innovation.
