Gunmen Attacked Kogi INEC Commissioner’s Residence And Burnt  Vehicle To Hide Party Identity

The gunmen who on Friday morning attacked the residence of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lokoja, Kogi State, Hale Gabriel Longpet, burnt their operational vehicle to hide the identity of their political party.

Friday morning attacked Longpet’s residence where they engaged the security personnel in a gun battle for over 30 minutes until reinforcements arrived and burnt several vehicles.

He said, “These are the same political thugs who protested to the INEC office a day before yesterday (Wednesday). During the attack at the REC’s residence, one of the cars they used failed to start; so, in case they would be traced, they burnt down the car.

The thugs had said during their protest that the Social Democratic Party (SDP) should not be allowed access to the INEC materials. All they are doing is to delay INEC from releasing the electoral materials used in the last election, because the tribunal gave INEC about 48 hours to provide the SDP with all the material used in the election which the party needs for the tribunal.

The tribunal has adjourned until the INEC provides the SDP with the materials used in the election before it will continue with the matter. The political thugs are doing everything possible to delay SDP’s access to the materials until time for presentation of documents at the tribunal elapses.

A release from the INEC had stated that the gunmen who attacked the REC’s residence at around 3:30am carried out the attack “a day after a mob besieged our state office.”

The electoral body stated that “We call for a thorough investigation and enhanced security protection for our personnel and assets in Kogi State.”

Speaking with SaharaReporters, a witness, who did not disclose his identity, said that the gunmen burnt one of their vehicles to cover up their identity and the identity of their political party.
