Zenith Bank Staff Tragically Passes Away After Release by Kidnappers

In a harrowing incident that highlights the grim consequences of kidnapping, a Zenith Bank staff member from the Suleja branch, identified as Austin Ilom, has tragically lost his life shortly after being released by kidnappers. The distressing sequence of events unfolded over three weeks, involving ransom demands, familial and professional dynamics, and ultimately, a devastating outcome.

Ilom was abducted from his residence in Kubwa, prompting his family to navigate the complex landscape of ransom negotiations. The kidnappers initially demanded a hefty ransom of 50 million Naira. However, complications arose as the bank, where Ilom worked, reportedly refused to contribute to the ransom, citing the circumstances of his kidnapping—occurring at home rather than during work duty.

Adding another layer to the situation, Ilom’s brother-in-law, Senator Agom Jarigbe, reportedly insisted on the bank’s involvement before taking action. The senator contributed 3 million Naira, leaving the responsibility for the remaining amount on the shoulders of Ilom’s friends and colleagues. They managed to raise a total of 11.5 million Naira to secure Ilom’s release.

Tragically, the narrative took a heart-wrenching turn as the kidnappers, having received the initial sum, instructed the family to come and retrieve Ilom. Upon his release, Ilom, already in a severely weakened state, was rushed to the Bwari hospital. However, the grim circumstances persisted, and shortly after requesting water, he passed away.

Austin Ilom, described as the “Best marketing staff in Suleja branch,” met a sorrowful end, highlighting the human toll of criminal activities such as kidnapping. The incident raises questions about the complexities of ransom negotiations, the emotional toll on families, and the broader societal impact of security challenges.
