Imo Labour Party Governorship Candidate Athan Achonu Protests at INEC Headquarters, Demands Certified Copy of Election Results

The aftermath of the Imo off-cycle election continues to stir controversy as Athan Achonu, the Labour Party governorship candidate, led a protest with numerous supporters to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja. Their primary demand was the true certified copy of the recently concluded poll in the state.

Accompanied by the National Youth Leader, Kennedy Ahanotu, Achonu voiced accusations against the electoral umpire, alleging a double standard in its handling of the November 11 election. The protest unfolded two weeks after INEC declared Governor Hope Uzodimma of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner, having secured 540,308 votes.

During the election, Uzodimma faced competition from Samuel Anyanwu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who garnered 71,503 votes and Achonu, the Labour Party candidate, securing 64,081 votes. The declared results have sparked dissatisfaction among Achonu and his supporters, leading to their direct action at the national headquarters.

The protest not only emphasizes the intensity of the electoral dispute but also highlights concerns about the transparency and fairness of the electoral process. Achonu’s allegations of double standards add a layer of complexity to the situation, raising questions about the credibility of the declared results and the overall conduct of the election.

As this political saga unfolds, the call for the certified copy of the election results underscores the significance of transparency in democratic processes. The involvement of the Labour Party candidate and his supporters in a direct confrontation with INEC suggests a growing need for clarity and accountability in post-election procedures.

The outcome of this protest could potentially impact the perception of electoral integrity in Imo State and contribute to the ongoing discourse surrounding electoral reforms. As the situation evolves, stakeholders, including the electoral commission and political contenders, will likely face heightened scrutiny, emphasizing the importance of addressing concerns to maintain public trust in the democratic system.
