Edo 2024: Obaseki Pledges Fair Process for Choosing Successor

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has said that the process of choosing his successor ahead of the 2024 governorship election in the state will be fair and transparent.

Obaseki made the pledge on Friday, September 29, 2023, while addressing members of the state executive council and other stakeholders at the Government House in Benin City.

He said that his administration’s focus is to finish strong, and that he will not endorse any candidate in the governorship race.

“The process of choosing my successor must be fair and transparent,” Obaseki said. “I will not endorse any candidate, but will give all aspirants a fair chance to compete.”

The governor’s statement is a welcome development, as it will help to ensure a peaceful and smooth transition to a new government in Edo State in 2024.

Some political observers have expressed concern that Obaseki may try to influence the outcome of the governorship primary election in favor of his preferred candidate. However, the governor’s pledge to a fair and transparent process suggests that he is committed to a democratic transition.

It is important to note that Obaseki himself was the beneficiary of a fair and transparent primary election in 2020. He defeated several other aspirants to win the nomination of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and then went on to win the general election.
