House of Representatives Urges Health Sector Emergency Declaration and Funding in 2024 Budget

The House of Representatives in Nigeria has passed a resolution urging the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the health sector. Additionally, they called for a substantial allocation of funds in the 2024 budget estimates to address the critical issues facing the sector.

The motion, titled “Need for the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency to collaborate with relevant health agencies in states and Local Governments to ensure the functionality of Primary Healthcare Centres,” was presented by Fayinka Oluwatoyin, a member representing Mushin Federal Constituency II of Lagos State.

State of Health Facilities in Nigeria:

Oluwatoyin highlighted the concerning state of health facilities in Nigeria, particularly in rural areas. He pointed out that out of approximately 39,983 hospitals and clinics in the country as of 2020, about 34,000 were primary healthcare centres. Unfortunately, only 20 percent of these centres are currently functional, exacerbating the challenges faced by communities.

The motion emphasized the dire need for medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, qualified personnel, stable electrical systems, proper bedding, and improved road networks to enhance the effectiveness of healthcare centres. The current deficiencies in these areas have contributed to increased mortality rates within healthcare facilities.

The resolution passed by the House of Representatives highlights the urgent need for substantial interventions in the Nigerian health sector. By calling for a state of emergency declaration and increased funding in the 2024 budget, the House aims to address the critical challenges faced by healthcare centres and improve the overall healthcare landscape in the country.
