L.P in Imo State Accuses INEC of Obstructing Legal Access to Election Documents

L.P in Imo State Accuses INEC……

The Imo State chapter of the Labour Party has raised a red flag, asserting that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is impeding its legal team’s access to certified true copies of documents pivotal to the governorship election. The party alleges that this obstruction is a deliberate delay tactic employed by the electoral body to hinder its efforts in challenging the election outcome at the tribunal.

Chibuikem Diala, the spokesperson for the LP governorship candidate, Nathan Achonu, conveyed the party’s concerns in a statement. The Labour Party contends that the delay in providing the necessary documentation is a strategic move by INEC, aimed at frustrating their plans to challenge the results through legal channels.

The statement points fingers directly at Prof Sylvia Agu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Imo State, accusing her office of withholding the certified true copies of election documents despite an official request made by the party’s solicitors. The request was duly acknowledged and received by the State INEC office on November 15, 2023.

In light of these allegations, the Labour Party in Imo State calls upon Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of INEC, to intervene and ensure that the necessary certified true copies are promptly released to Nathan Achonu’s legal team. The party emphasizes the importance of transparency and adherence to electoral laws, asserting that any delays in accessing essential documents undermine the democratic process.

This development raises concerns about the fairness and openness of the electoral process in Imo State, prompting a call for swift action to address the perceived obstruction of the Labour Party’s legal proceedings. As the situation unfolds, stakeholders will be closely watching for a resolution that upholds the principles of justice and transparency in electoral practices.
