Pastor and Brother Sentenced to Death for Land Dispute Killing….

In a verdict delivered on Wednesday, the Akwa Ibom State High Court in Essien Udim local government Area has sentenced Pastor Uduak Umoren and his brother, Emmanuel Umoren, to death for the fatal beating of Iboro Joe over a piece of land.

The deceased, a 45-year-old farmer and trader, was tragically beaten to death while consoling his sister-in-law in Adiasim Ikot Ekon, Essien Udim LGA, on the loss of her husband. The incident occurred when they visited the late husband’s farmland to assess its value for burial arrangements.

According to the sister-in-law’s testimony, the wife of the second convict observed them on the farmland and alerted her husband, suspecting a superstitious ritual. This led to the violent confrontation where the second convict, his wife, son, and brother joined in the assault, using machetes and broken bottles.

The victim was left in a state of unconsciousness and later succumbed to his injuries after three days.

Justice Winifred Effiong, presiding over the case, declared the accused guilty of murder, stating that the prosecution had convincingly established their guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The judge consequently sentenced them to death by hanging, affirming that the accused had deliberately caused the deceased’s demise.
