Tinubu, Sultan Appeal to Labour Unions to Shelve Planned Strike

The president, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, have appealed to labour unions to shelve their planned nationwide strike action.

The unions have threatened to embark on the strike over the feeral government’s failure to meet their demands, including the implementation of the new minimum wage and the consequential adjustments.

Tinubu, in a statement on Thursday, September 29, 2023, urged the unions to reconsider their decision to go on strike, saying that it would have a devastating impact on the economy and the people of Nigeria.

He said that he understands the concerns of the workers, but that the federal government is working hard to address them. He appealed to the unions to give the government more time to resolve the issues.

The Sultan of Sokoto, in a similar appeal, urged the unions to give peace a chance, saying that strike action is not the best way to resolve their grievances.

He said that the unions should engage the government in dialogue to find a lasting solution to their problems.

The Sultan also appealed to the government to do everything possible to address the concerns of the workers, saying that they deserve better.

The appeals by Tinubu and the Sultan of Sokoto come at a time when the country is already facing a number of economic challenges, including high inflation and unemployment.

It is hoped that the unions will heed the appeals and shelve their planned strike action. A strike at this time would only worsen the country’s economic problems and make the lives of Nigerians more difficult.

The appeals by Tinubu and the Sultan of Sokoto are timely and well-intentioned. A strike by labour unions at this time would have a devastating impact on the Nigerian economy and the people.

However, it is important to note that the unions have legitimate grievances. The federal government has failed to meet a number of its promises to workers, including the implementation of the new minimum wage and the consequential adjustments.

The government must do more to address the concerns of the workers. This includes being more transparent about its financial situation and its plans for the future. The government should also be more willing to engage in dialogue with the unions.

The unions should also be willing to compromise. They should not insist on all of their demands being met before they call off the strike.

By working together, the government and the unions can find a solution that is fair to both sides.
