Watkins’ hat-trick fires Villa’s rout of hapless Brighton
Ollie Watkins scored a hat-trick as Aston Villa thrashed Brighton 6-1 in the Premier League on Saturday.
Watkins opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a header from Ashley Young’s cross. He doubled Villa’s lead in the 26th minute, finishing off a flowing move involving Jacob Ramsey and Leon Bailey.
Pervis Estupinan’s own goal made it 3-0 to Villa before half-time.
Ansu Fati pulled one back for Brighton in the 55th minute, but Watkins completed his hat-trick five minutes later with a tap-in from close range.
Philippe Coutinho added Villa’s fifth goal in the 69th minute with a long-range strike, and Danny Ings rounded off the scoring in the 81st minute.
The victory was Villa’s biggest in the Premier League since they beat Middlesbrough 6-0 in December 2019.
Watkins was the star of the show for Villa, but the whole team performed well. They were clinical in attack and solid in defence.
Brighton were simply outplayed. They never looked like getting back into the game after Villa went 3-0 up before half-time.
The victory was a much-needed one for Villa. They had lost their previous two games and were under pressure to deliver.
The result also puts Villa in a good position ahead of their next game against Arsenal next Saturday.
