Over 150 Obigbo Residents Still Detained: Calls for Prosecution of Wike, Buratai, and Collaborators Intensify

Over 150 Obigbo Residents…..

A report by the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety) and the Ekwenche Research Institute reveals that 152 residents from Obigbo, Rivers State, who were raided by the Nigerian Army in October 2020, remain in secret military detention. The report calls for the prosecution of former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, former Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai, and other alleged collaborators for their involvement in the crime.

Titled “Inside Wike’s Bloody Era In (Obigbo) Rivers State And Unspeakable Account Of The Nigerian Army War-Grade Invasion, Crackdown And Deadly Use Of Force,” the report traces the abductees to various secret Nigerian Army dungeons in different locations and highlights the need for justice.

The Nigerian Army’s actions in Obigbo followed the ENDSARS protests in October 2020, with Wike allegedly inciting security agencies against Igbo residents and politicizing the events. The report states, “No fewer than 130 defenceless residents were killed, 150 deadly injured, and 540 men and 80 women of productive age-brackets abducted. Dozens of the 80 abducted Obigbo women were also alleged to have been sexually abused in military captivity.”

It further notes that 152 of the 620 abducted residents are still missing in the hands of the Nigerian Army since late October 2020. The report criticizes the lack of accountability, pointing out that key perpetrators of heinous crimes, including those involved in the Obigbo Army massacre, have been rewarded with government appointments and promotions.

The report concludes with strong recommendations, urging the removal of Nyesom Wike as a minister and declaring him and 12 other key perpetrators unfit for any public office, both locally and internationally. The victims’ families are encouraged to file civil claims against the perpetrators, and international countries are called upon to impose visa bans on those involved.
