Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has said that the process of choosing his successor ahead of the 2024 governorship election must be fair and transparent.
Obaseki made the call while speaking at a meeting with stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
He said that the party would provide a level-playing field for all aspirants and that the best candidate would be chosen to emerge as the party’s flagbearer.
“I want to assure you that the process of choosing my successor will be fair and transparent,” Obaseki said. “There is no anointed candidate. All aspirants will have an equal opportunity to compete.”

Obaseki also urged the stakeholders to work together to ensure that the PDP wins the 2024 governorship election.
“We need to put our house in order and work together to win the next election,” he said. “We cannot afford to lose Edo State to the opposition.”
Obaseki’s call for a fair and transparent successor process is a welcome development. It is important that the PDP in Edo State conducts a free and fair primary election to ensure that the best candidate is chosen to represent the party in the 2024 governorship election.

The PDP has been in power in Edo State since 1999, but it lost the 2020 governorship election to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The PDP is facing a tough challenge in the 2024 governorship election. The APC is the ruling party in the state and it has the resources and the incumbency advantage. However, the PDP is still the most popular party in the state and it has a good chance of winning the election if it can unite behind a strong candidate.
